Funny: Fans Suggest “House of the Dragon” Needs to Provide Viewers with a Digestion Dictionary for Character Names

Watching the second season of HBOโ€™s โ€œGame of Thronesโ€ prequel series โ€œHouse of the Dragonโ€

ย has been a lot like running into an old acquaintance from high school at a bar.

You vaguely recognize them from afar. Perhaps they sat in the back during Ms. Carpโ€™s English Lit class.ย

Or was it Chemistry? One thing is certain: You have no idea what their name is.

This is how I feel, two years on, about 99% of the Targaryen family.

ย After casually devouring Season 1 as though it was not delivery, but DiGiorno, I still donโ€™t know Aemond from Aegon.ย

Try though I might, I just canโ€™t keep track of these incest-loving, humorless platinum blondes.

Clarity was never a problem during the eight seasons of โ€œGame of Thrones,โ€ even though there were far more individuals and plotlines to follow.

Yes, a mainstay of George R.R. Martinโ€™s saga was Emilia Clarkeโ€™s Daenerys, but there were also plenty of easy, single-syllable monikers to aid digestion: Ned, Jon, Bran and Robb Stark.

Even the two-syllable folks โ€” Jaime, Cersei, Sansa โ€” were a cinch.

Not true of โ€œDragonโ€โ€™s crew of identical sounding royal letter-mush: Rhaenyra, Halaena, Daemon, Aemond, Aegon, Jacaerys, Viserys, Larys.

Jeez. Is that a cast list or a password generator?

Adding to the mania, while the original seriesโ€™ ensemble included members of several different vying houses flung all over Westeros, most of โ€œDragonโ€โ€™s denizens are Targaryens and live in just two castles.ย

All of them look pretty much the same.

Iโ€™m even having trouble with the few non-Targaryens. Instead of Ser Criston Cole, I often hear Ser Colin Jost. Heโ€™s shtupping Alicent, whose name I just had to Google. Thank God her dad is simply Otto, as in von Bismarck.

By now you might think I need to go back to school. Youโ€™re probably right, but the character jumble is indicative of a larger narrative issue faced by โ€œDragonโ€: Aimlessness.

Because of gruesome deaths, quality British acting and giant flying reptiles, the epic drama is entertaining enough. However, itโ€™s less โ€œGame of Thronesโ€ than โ€œSpat of Fam.โ€ย

Extremely similar relatives with extremely similar titles are battling for the crown of Westeros. Itโ€™s an extremely similar story.

Too bad the existential threat that โ€œwinter is comingโ€ isnโ€™t there to add grander stakes and purpose, and allow disparate clans to briefly cooperate, as it was on โ€œGoT.โ€

And the tremendous fun of fan theories about who will win out in the end doesnโ€™t apply to a prequel (you can look that info up right now). Guess what? Anakin becomes Darth Vader.

Also, would it kill these guys to tell a joke? The stone-faced Targaryens behave like very naughty monks.

Mostly, though, I just never want to see another โ€œaeโ€ ever again.

As the second season of HBOโ€™s โ€œHouse of the Dragonโ€ continues, the struggle to keep track of the Targaryen family tree persists. With names like Rhaenyra, Halaena, Daemon, Aemond, Aegon, Jacaerys, Viserys, and Larys, it’s like trying to decode a password generator.

Unlike the original โ€œGame of Thronesโ€ series, where characters had distinct names and backgrounds, โ€œDragonโ€ presents a challenge with its ensemble of identical-sounding figures vying for power and dominance.

While the show offers entertainment through gruesome deaths, stellar acting, and impressive CGI dragons, it lacks the grand stakes and purpose that the looming threat of winter brought in the original series. The absence of a common enemy to unite the warring factions leaves the narrative feeling somewhat directionless.

Furthermore, the stoic demeanor of the Targaryens makes the show feel like a drama filled with humorless monks rather than dynamic characters engaging in political intrigue and power struggles.

Perhaps what โ€œHouse of the Dragonโ€ needs is a touch of levity and clarity in its storytelling. It wouldnโ€™t hurt to inject a bit of humor into the mix and simplify the array of characters and their relationships for the audience to follow more easily.

While the show may have its shortcomings, it still offers a glimpse into the intricate world of Westeros and the tumultuous history of the Targaryen dynasty. Stay tuned for more updates on this epic tale of power, betrayal, and dragons.
