Buckingham Palace unveils controversial portrait of King Charles in cancer battle, but wait… why does the king’s smile look so awkward?

Buckingham Palace has unveiled a striking new photograph of King Charles III, captured just months prior to his cancer diagnosis.

The 75-year-old monarch, who is currently being treated for the disease, is seen smiling in the regal image, released to mark Armed Forces Day in the United Kingdom.

The portrait was taken by society photographer Hugo Burnard last November, less than three months before Charles announced he had cancer.

โ€œIt is a mix of formality and informality, which draws you in,โ€ Burnard told The Telegraph of his photograph.ย

โ€œThe King wears his medals with pride but they are not the main feature of the picture.โ€

The image shows Charles sporting a wry smile as he wears his Field Marshal No1 full ceremonial frock coat, complete with medals, swords and decorations.

Royal watchers were delighted by the release of the photograph, which was shared on the monarchโ€™s official Instagram page, garnering more than 200,000 likes in little more than 12 hours.

โ€œVery nice picture. I like the composition and colors in this portrait,โ€ one impressed viewer wrote.

โ€œThis portrait is 100% better than the red blob,โ€ another declared. โ€œThat one is an embarrassment to be English. โ€œ

The โ€œred blobโ€ referenced in that comment refers to a polarizing portrait of the monarch painted by the artist Jonathan Yeo, which shows a ghostly looking Charles in front of a red backdrop.

The artwork was unveiled last month in London and quickly divided opinion, with some detractors saying it looked like the Charles was โ€œburning in hell.โ€ย

Both the new photograph and the controversial painting have been unveiled in the midst of the kingโ€™s cancer battle.

News of Charlesโ€™ cancer diagnosis came to light after he underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate. There, doctors discovered โ€œa separate issue of concernโ€ that requires treatment.

Following the release of the new photograph of King Charles III, royal admirers have praised the striking image for capturing the monarchโ€™s regal presence with a touch of informality. The portrait, taken by renowned society photographer Hugo Burnard, showcases the 75-year-old king donning his Field Marshal No1 full ceremonial frock coat, adorned with medals, swords, and decorations.

Itโ€™s evident that Burnardโ€™s keen eye for blending formality with a personal touch has resonated with viewers, as the photograph quickly garnered over 200,000 likes on the monarchโ€™s official Instagram page within just 12 hours of its release.

Comparisons have been drawn to a recent controversial painting of King Charles III by artist Jonathan Yeo, which received mixed reviews for its unconventional portrayal of the monarch. While some critics likened the painting to Charles burning in hell against a red backdrop, others have lauded Burnardโ€™s photograph as a more dignified and pleasing representation of the king.

With Charles currently undergoing treatment for cancer, the unveiling of these artistic renderings has taken on added significance. The public response to both the photograph and the painting sheds light on the diverse opinions and interpretations of the kingโ€™s image in popular culture.
