His controversies also knocked the Prince off first-place as the โmost popular Royal Family memberโ, says Sarah Hewson
PRINCE Harryโs good work has been โdrowned outโ by recent controversies โ and thatโs why nobody thinks he deserves a war hero award, a royal expert has claimed.ย
The Duke of Sussex was honoured with the Pat Tillman Award for Service gong at the 2024 ESPYS in LA last week for his Invictus Games work.
But due to his โmudslingingโ memoir, Spare, and bombshell Oprah interview in March 2021, how much he โdeservesโ the award has been up for debate.
Harryโs acceptance sparked strong criticism after ex-military chiefs previously urged him to reject the gong โ while a whopping 70,000 people signed a petition to stop it.
The Pat Tillman Award for Service, according to ESPN, honors a sports figure who has served others in a way that echoes Pat Tillmanโs legacy as an NFL player and US Army Ranger.
Royal expert Sarah Hewson believes Harry is โgoing to be very stungโ by the backlash to his win as itโs coming from people he โrespectsโ.
โI think heโs going to be very stung by the backlash to this award,โ she told The Sunโs Royal Exclusive.ย
โWhat he has done through the Invictus Games is extremely laudable; I think itโs the best thing that he has done.ย
โThis is his legacy project and there are so many people that would say he has changed their lives, even saved their lives.โ
Sarah noted that the backlash โisnโt coming from the usual suspectsโ โ meaning it will carry more weight for the Duke.ย
It is instead coming from Pat Tillmanโs mother โ the war hero that the award is in honour of โ and senior military figures.
Mary Tilman previously said she believed there were others โfar more fittingโ and with less โprivilegeโ who could have won the gong.
โPrince Harry would respect their opinion,โ Sarah explained. โThe likes of Lord West, the former Head of the Royal Navy, for example.
โTheyโre saying he should turn this down, that he doesnโt deserve it โ and thatโs really, really going to sting for him.โ
Sarah believes that Harryโs charitable work, military service and position as Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation have been โdrowned outโ by recent controversies.ย
She cited his โmudslingingโ memoir, Spare, and March 2021 interview with Oprah, where he and wife Meghan Markle made a series of shocking allegations.
The pair sparked a race row by alleging an unnamed member of the Royal Family spoke about โhow dark his (Archieโs) skin might be when heโs bornโ.
During the interview, Meghan also said she was prevented from seeking mental health support when she was in crisis.
โAll of the good work he has done is unfortunately overshadowed by the Oprah interview, Netflix series, Spare, the mudslinging,โ Sarah continued.
โUnfortunately, those are the noises that are much, much louder in this.
โAnd when we see him at the Invictus Games, you see the old Harry, the true Harry โ he comes to life again.โ
Spare, Harryโs tell-all tome, was derided for his headline-grabbing claims about senior royals.ย
Among these William calling Meghan โdifficultโ and โrudeโ, the King being jealous of the Prince and Princess of Wales and thatย Charles refused to allow Meghan to join him in Scotland as the late Queen was dying.
The memoir was the fastest-selling non-fiction book in the UK since records began.
Sarah believes the events of recent years โ including the publication of Spare โ also threw Harry off first-place as the โmost popular Royal Family memberโ.
โHe was seen as relatable,โ she said.ย
โYes, there were the headlines about the party prince and whatever, but it was part of his charm.ย
โHe was an extremely powerful force within the Royal Family because of that knack of reaching people that others couldnโt.ย
โHe had his motherโs touch in that way.โ
