Britainโs Got Talent star, Connie Talbot, has revealed her terrifying stalking ordeal after appearing on the show, aged just six.
The singer, now 23, shot to fame on the ITV talent show, where she finished runner up on the first series of of the primetime programme back in 2007.
With her angelic rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Connie had legions of fans around the world.ย
However, she has now revealed the dangers of her popularity, explaining that an adult man tried to approach her, posing as a journalist.
Speaking about the โdarker sideโ of fame, she recalled: โ[Fame] exposed me to the darker sides of the world that probably a child wouldnโt hear of till later in life.
โWe got approached by a journalist who was meant to work for a newspaper but it turned out that he was just interested in children,โ she told the DEEP YouTube channel.ย
Connie continued: โLuckily I was protected by my mum and dad but that was probably the first time I realised safety was a massive thing for me.โ
Connieโs parents were so concerned for her safety that a bodyguard accompanied her to school after her appearance on the ITV talent show.
She recalled: โI remember when I first got off the show, I had a bodyguard called Danny who was 6โ10. Heโd follow me to school everyday, be with me on the playground. People would climb the trees outside my school to get a photo of a little girl in uniform which is just gross.โ
After Britainโs Got Talent, which Connie insists did definitely not make her โmega richโ, she released her debut album Over The Rainbow in November 2007. It was certified gold in the UK and double platinum in South Korea. She released Christmas albums in 2008 and 2009 and a fourth album in 2012. Her most recent song, Growing Pains, was released last year.
During an appearance on This Morning in 2023, the singer said she is โso gratefulโ for her stint on Britainโs Got Talent, and branded it โthe beginning of her life.โ
Connie said of BGT: โIt feels like that was the beginning of my life, because I donโt really remember anything before that. But I remember bits of the show. At it was just, I really just wanted to be on the X Factor and obviously I was too young, so I was like: โyesโ this was the next thing.โโ
She continued: โAnd It was the first season so there were no expectations for the show whatsoever. It just started as a fun day out. Itโs given me a career today, which is incredible. Iโm so lucky.โ
When asked whether she was looked after on the show, she explained the motto she was given was โjust have fun,โ adding: โIn my head I was Leona Lewis on stage singing Over the Rainbow.โ
