Prince William and Prince Harry and their families are now estranged but when the future King of England met his younger brotherโs wife, they had a more promising start
When it came to meeting her royal boyfriendโs big brother, Meghan Markle wasnโt sure what to expect.
She thought he would grill her and ask her lots of questions about herself and her intentitions โ but she was completely wrong.
In fact, Prince William was very relaxed and his opening line was just about as welcoming as you could expect when meeting your future in-laws.
In โFinding Freedom,โ biographers reveal Prince Williamโs first words upon meeting Meghan: โI was looking forward to meeting the girl who has put that silly grin on my brotherโs face.โ
While the first meeting went well, things didnโt continue quite so smoothly.
In their Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, the Duchess recalls a slightly awkward early meeting with Kate.
She said: โWhen Will and Kate came over and I met her for the first time they came over for dinner. I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot. Iโve always been a hugger, I didnโt realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.
โI guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go โYou can relax nowโ, but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me.โ
Harry detailed more about the womenโs relationship in his memoir Spare, saying they had a row over bridesmaid dresses in the lead-up to his wedding that left Meghan in tears. He said Kate โgrimacedโ when the duchess borrowed her lip gloss and wrote how Kate asked for an apology from Meghan when she accused her of having โbaby brainโ following the birth of Prince Louis.
William and Harry are now famously estranged, reportedly first falling out around Christmas 2018 when Harry felt William wasnโt doing enough to include his wife in the family. Royal author Katie Nicholl said: โHarry felt William wasnโt rolling out the red carpet for Meghan and told him so.โ
Fellow royal expert Tom Quinn claimed William and Kate had later reached out to Meghan and Harry once they had moved to California, urging them to bring their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to the UK. He said Meghan refused.
Sadly, the fallout doesnโt show any signs of abating โ the author told the Mirror earlier this year: โThe fallout has gone on far too long but both men are notoriously stubborn,โ he said. โWilliam feels that the Royal family has been badly damaged by his brother and Harry feels that William has always treated him as an irrelevance.โ
Prince William and Prince Harry may have started off on good terms when Meghan Markle first joined the royal family, but unfortunately, their relationship has since taken a turn for the worse.
Despite Prince William’s initial warm welcome to Meghan, tensions began to rise between the brothers and their wives. Meghan’s easy-going nature clashed with the formality of the royal family, leading to some awkward encounters with Kate Middleton.
Things only got worse as time went on, with Harry disclosing that there were disagreements over bridesmaid dresses that left Meghan in tears. Kate also allegedly asked for an apology from Meghan, showing the strain in their relationship.
The rift between William and Harry deepened when Harry felt that his brother wasn’t supportive enough of Meghan. This led to the brothers becoming estranged, with both sides feeling like they have been wronged.
Despite attempts to reconcile, the feud between the brothers shows no signs of ending anytime soon. Both William and Harry are known for their stubbornness, which only prolongs the family drama.
It’s clear that there are still unresolved issues between the brothers, and the royal family continues to be divided by their ongoing feud. Only time will tell if they will be able to mend their relationship and move forward as a family once again.
